Sydney dentist Dr Alex Dietz provides quality general and preventative dentistry at his Mosman practice.

Q: Should I use a mouthwash regularly ?
A:  By all means. “Savacol” (by Colgate) is a proven and efficient rinse, especially at night time, before going to bed. Try dipping your toothbrush in Savacol (and brush with a small amount of tooth-paste).

Q: Which tooth brush / paste should I use? (a question we hear quite often-with a simple answer)
A: The one which feels most comfortable. What you accomplish with it is more important than the brand.

Q: Can I use chewing gum without concern for my gums / teeth?
A: Chewing gum has multiple beneficial effects on both gums and teeth. Apart from the cleansing effect it massages the gums, stimulates salivary flow and therefore reduces sugar and acid-levels which may be present in the mouth.

Q: How often should I brush my teeth?
A: We recommend two to three times a day, after each main meal. Cutting the long day in the middle interrupts plaque build-up and gives you fresh breath after lunch - you will feel good.

Q: Should I consider using an electric tooth-brush ?
A:. By all means. In particular the Braun-brand (marketed by Oral-B) is a very efficient tool
in removing plaque. One can hardly replicate by hand what this clever oscillating brush can do.

Q: Up to what age can I have braces?
A: There is no set age limit to it. More adults are having orthodontic adjustments done than ever before.  Generally good results are quicker and easier to achieve during formative years.

Q: I am grinding my teeth at night, what can I do?
A: Your dentist can help you with a night-guard which will protect your teeth and may ultimately disrupt the habit.

Q: Can I hurt my gums when flossing?
A: Flossing is the single most important accessory next to brushing. The more often and regularly you floss, the more skilled you will become. Ask your dentist for a demo at your next visit if you feel insecure.

Q: My gums are bleeding slightly when I brush my teeth, what can I do?
A: Your gums are inflamed (Gingivitis), so call your dentist for a thorough scale & clean and some sound advice – even if it’s less than 6 months since your last visit.
